The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy of palpation methods for locating the transverse processes of the first cervical vertebra and masseter muscle using radiographic images as the gold-standard method and the association between personal characteristics with the observed accuracy … MORE

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Decreases Hospital Stay and Healthcare Cost in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is used in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Evidence suggests that OMT can reduce both patients’ recovery time and the financial cost of their acute medical treatment and rehabilitation. Multiple studies from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are presented in this article that demonstrate infants treated with OMT recover faster, are discharged earlier, and have lower healthcare costs than their non-OMT-treated counterparts. Data clearly show that adjunctive OMT facilitates feeding coordination in newborns, such as latching, suckling, swallowing, and breathing, and increases long-term weight gain and maintenance, which reduces hospital length of stay (LOS) … MORE

Patient-centered care in musculoskeletal practice: Key elements to support clinicians to focus on the person

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, needs to move towards a broader biopsychosocial understanding of musculoskeletal conditions and the delivery of high-value care for people with persistent pain conditions, in which a patient-centered approach is a key feature. However, it has been reported that clinicians experience difficulties with integrating patient-centered care principles into their clinical practice. Based on a focused symposium about patient-centered care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, held during the online 2021 World Physiotherapy Congress, the purpose of this article is to share key elements of the content of this symposium with a wider audience, aimed at enabling clinicians to enhance patient-centeredness in their current practice. These key elements include establishing meaningful connections, deciding together and self-management support. Moreover, challenges on patient-centered care in low/middle income countries will be discussed and recommendations to implement patient-centered care in clinical practice will be provided … MORE

Does the student-led osteopathy clinical learning environment prepare students for practice?

  |   By  |  0 Comments

For many allied health disciplines, pre-professional clinical education takes place in student-led, on-campus clinic environments. In these environments, pre-professional students undertake patient care under the supervision of qualified health professionals. Literature exploring the benefits of the student-led clinical learning environment is limited and little is known about the role student-led clinics play in preparing pre-professional osteopathy students for professional practice. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of osteopathy clinical educators about the role of the student-led clinic at Victoria University in preparing pre-professional students for professional practice … MORE

Effects of Muscle Energy Technique and Joint Manipulation on Pulmonary Functions, Mobility, Disease Exacerbations, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: A Quasiexperimental Study

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is primarily a disease of the lungs; however, extrapulmonary comorbidities like rib cage stiffness, decreased thoracic spine mobility, postural changes, and skeletal muscle dysfunctions also coexist. Muscle energy technique (MET) and joint manipulation (JM) may help alleviate these musculoskeletal problems. This study was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of MET and JM on pulmonary functions, dyspnea, chest wall mobility, disease exacerbations, and health-related quality of life in COPD patients … MORE

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: A Brief Review of the Hands-On Treatment Approaches and Their Therapeutic Uses

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is an emerging practice in the healthcare field with increasing popularity and evidence-based therapy. Osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT) include hands-on manipulations of different body structures to increase systemic homeostasis and total patient well-being. Indeed, this new realm of the whole patient-based approach is being taught in osteopathic schools around the country, and the osteopathic principles of a mind-body-spirit-based treatment are being instilled in many new Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) students. However, despite their proven therapeutic value, there are still many individuals, both in and outside the medical profession, who are unaware (or misinformed) of the therapeutic uses and potential benefits of OMT. Here, we provide a brief introduction to this osteopathic therapeutic approach, focusing on the hands-on techniques that are regularly implemented in the clinical setting … MORE

The utilisation and attitudes to patient reported outcome measures by Australian osteopaths: A cross sectional study

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide information on patients’ views of their symptoms, functional status, health related quality of life and are an important part of evidence-informed practice and patient-centred care. The utilisation of and attitudes to PROMs by Australian osteopaths is unknown … ABSTRACT

Acupuncture and Osteopathic Medicine for Atopic Dermatitis – a Three-armed Randomized Controlled Explorative Clinical Trial

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Atopic dermatitis (AD) patients frequently use acupuncture (ACU) and osteopathic medicine (OM), although their therapeutic benefits are unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of ACU and OM in AD patients … MORE

Investigating the safety and feasibility of osteopathic medicine in the pediatric oncology outpatient setting

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Pediatric patients receiving chemotherapy experience unwanted therapy-induced side effects, commonly constipation and pain that diminish quality of life. To date, few studies have investigated the safety and feasibility of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in pediatric oncology. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the safety and feasibility of OMT in pediatric oncology outpatient clinics … MORE

The Osteopaths’ Therapeutic Approaches Questionnaire (Osteo-TAQ) – A content validity study

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Osteopathy requires reliable and valid research tools to generate evidence on the different aspects of practice including how practitioners approach the clinical care of patients. Such research will help the osteopathy profession understand its contribution to healthcare provision and communicate this to stakeholders. However, current quantitative tools to measure the different aspects of osteopathic practice are either focused on single pain conditions or developed from other health professional contexts. The Osteopaths’ Therapeutic Approaches Questionnaire (Osteo-TAQ) is a novel tool developed from qualitative research and aims to measure and describe multiple dimensions of osteopaths’ therapeutic approach to patient care. The aim of this study was to further develop the Osteo-TAQ to assess the content validity of the tool … ABSTRACT
